The event was unique for Ukraine due to its focus on ophthalmic pathology—an important yet quite niche area of diagnostics. The organizer and moderator of the forum was Roman Moskalenko, Head of the Department of Pathological Anatomy at Sumy State University.

The primary driving force behind organizing “SUMY PATHOLOGY HORIZONS” was Sumy State University’s participation in the UK-UKRAINE TWINNING INITIATIVE (coordinated by the Cormack Consultancy Group (CCG)) and the subsequent collaboration with the University of Liverpool within this framework. Holding this scientific event was made possible through the cooperation of the Department of Pathological Anatomy and the Liverpool Ophthalmic Oncology Research Group (LOORG), as well as the personal initiative of the heads of these units, Prof. Roman Moskalenko and Prof. Sarah Coupland.

The conference was solemnly opened by the Director of the Medical Institute, Professor Andriy Loboda, who emphasized the vital importance of international integration for the Medical Institute of Sumy State University.

Professor Sarah E. Coupland, who is currently the President-Elect of the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) and a leading global expert in ophthalmic oncology, delivered a keynote lecture on modern trends in ophthalmic oncology and digital eye pathology. Her talk seamlessly evolved into a profound and engaging discussion regarding the mechanisms of tumor metastasis to the liver.

A significant contribution to the wealth of the conference was made by leading Ukrainian scientists: Professor Serhiy Zyablytsev, Professor Olena Dyadyk, and Valentyna Zaritska (Shupyk National Healthcare University of Ukraine), Oleksandr Artamonov (The Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the NAMS of Ukraine), as well as Dr. Olena Kuzenko, PhD (Sumy State University).

The technological core of the conference featured a computer diagnostics block based on information-extremal AI algorithms developed by the well-known Sumy scientific school of Professor Anatoliy Dovbysh. This section included innovative presentations by Ihor Shelekhov (SNAU), Dmytro Prylepa, Roman Moskalenko, and Taras Savchenko (SumDU).

A spectacular finale was the performance of the new generation of researchers: PhD students from the Liverpool Ophthalmic Oncology Research Group, Max Jackson and James Draper. They demonstrated the highest global standard of AI applications in medicine, which was logically complemented by a presentation from a young SumDU scientist, Ruslana Lakhtaryna (PhD), focusing on the digital differentiation of breast tumors.

The conference was a triumphant success. The organizers sincerely hope that this “winter sowing” of international unity and knowledge will soon bring generous fruits for the development of Ukrainian science in a peaceful future!

On May 21, 2026, the Medical Institute of Sumy State University hosted the first iteration of the International Scientific and Practical Conference “SUMY PATHOLOGY HORIZONS: Focus on Modern Diagnostics (including Ophthalmic Subspecialty)”.
